Maybe, someday…

I loved musical theatre as a kid and one of my favorite songs was that one in ANNIE entitled Maybe. In it, Annie sings about who her parents might be and how she might have a beautiful life with them someday. Of course, it’s not until she gives up on this imagined scenario that she is able to head toward a real future. Didn’t mean to spoil the ending there, but has anyone really not seen this show?

One of the most common things I hear when people don’t want to get rid clutter they’ve been holding onto for a long time is, “Maybe, someday…” Usually the end of that sentence is the description of an amazing project they’ve had in their head. Honestly, I am always in awe of the beautiful, creative minds of the people I work with.

But holding on to so many “somedays” can be unhealthy. If you have a shelf overflowing with items that represent what could be, what you didn’t get to, or what you wish you had time for, then that’s a shelf chips away at your sense of calm. If you have materials for 10 someday-projects staring at you, yelling, “pick me,” then how can you possibly choose which one to do?

Choose one or two projects that you can do right now. When a project is complete, bring another one into the rotation.  Remember, when something is taking up space in your home, it’s also taking up space in your mind.

And when you do work on your projects… may I recommend listening to the Annie soundtrack. I dare you not to sing along!
