How many pens do I actually need?

My clients know that in addition to being an organizer, I’m a writer. Sure, I’m mostly on my laptop, but I’m all about old-school journaling, writing reminders on Post-its, and there’s nothing like crossing off a completed to-do item. So, I have lots of pens. Two questions keep Mount Pen under control.

First: where are all these pens? Pens should be placed strategically where you use them. For me, that’s my kitchen, my bedside table and my everyday handbags. And it may seem obvious, but make sure they’re near paper! The rest should go in ONE storage place — a bin in an office or hall closet — until duty calls.

Second: How many of these pens actually work? Next time you binge Netflix, do a quick squiggle on scrap paper with each pen and toss the ones that don’t work. This will quickly whittle down your collection. To keep the number down, purchase refills! This will save space and money and prevent waste.

A pen is a wonderful tool for creativity that can also be used to let your spouse know it’s their turn to take out the trash. Decluttering and organizing your pens gives them the life they were meant to have! And don’t forget the mental clarity of knowing every pen you see is ready to serve.
